Language Tests for Canadian Immigration

Canada’s official bilingualism makes it unique among American nations. Both English and French played an important part of Canada’s history. In fact, they are both considered valid across the country. Further, prospective immigrants must display some skill with these languages to migrate successfully. Thankfully, you do not need to know both languages, though that would increase your chances.

The two languages are not used equally throughout the country, even though they are legally equal. In fact, Québec is the only province where French is spoken more than English. However, French skills will get you into the country regardless. Nonetheless, English is recommended if you need to learn either language unless you plan to live in Québec. Immigration in Québec is different from the rest of Canada. You can learn more about it in this article.

Every immigrant must complete an official language test before migrating to Canada. There are many different language tests available. Today we will go over the different tests and the reasons to pick each one. If you wish to migrate to Canada, it is a good idea to start learning a language now.

The Various Language Tests

You must take one of these tests before migrating to Canada. There are two official English tests available and only one French test. Each test is designed with a different purpose in mind. Thus, they have different advantages for each person.

IELTS – IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System. This is the most popular English test available. It has testing centers worldwide and this makes it very accessible. It is a standard English test that English-speaking countries use for migratory purposes. Thus, it is easier to find training specifically for this test. Our allies at https://alianzacolomboinglesa.com/ can help you prepare for this test if you are a Spanish speaker.

CELPIP – CELPIP stands for Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program. Canada’s English is very slightly different since it borrows from both British and American features. Thus, the IRCC designed this test specifically for Canadian English. However, this test is practically only available within Canada. Recently, a testing center was founded in Dubai, technically making it an internationally available test.

TEF – TEF stands for Test d’évaluation de français. This is the official language test for the French language in Canada. It has two variations: TEFAQ and TEF. TEFAQ is only valid for migrating to Québec. However, TEF is valid at both the federal and provincial levels. Thus, the standard TEF test is recommended, specially if you do not plan to live in Québec. You can learn French with our allies at https://onparle.net/ if you speak Spanish.

What Language Test Scores Do I Need?

Unfortunately, there is not a single answer to this question. In truth, the score required for immigration will change for each immigration program. Thus, the score that you require depends on the path you choose to take. In fact, some point-based programs like Express Entry will reward more points for higher scores on language tests. Thankfully, you can retake tests if you are unsatisfied with your results.

The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is important to understand when it comes to test scores. Basically, the CLB is a standard measurement of English language skill used within Canada. The French equivalent to this is the NCLC (Niveaux de competence linguistique canadiens). The lowest score is a 4 and the highest is a 10. Migratory programs will require scores around the 5-7 range, depending on your method of immigration.
