How Employers Find Foreign Workers

Occasionally, an employer can have difficulty finding Canadians to fill certain positions.  The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) allows these employers to find foreign talent to fill these positions for a time. If you are looking for a job offer, understanding how employers find foreign workers can be very important. If you understand the TFWP you can prepare to use the system to your advantage. This article will explain how the TFWP works. This will hopefully give you a better idea of what companies look for and how you can prepare to find a job offer.

Before exploring how employers can use the TFWP it is important to understand what an LMIA is. An LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) is a document that assesses the impact of hiring foreign workers to fill a position. A positive LMIA is almost always necessary before an employer hires foreign workers, though there are exceptions. Here are the different ways in which employers can hire a foreign worker.

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program

The TFWP is a collection of many smaller programs. All of these programs help employers find foreign workers. Some of these programs look for very specific skills, so you can see which skills are worth learning.

Global Talent Stream (GTS) – This is one of the more popular uses of the TFWP. It is a pilot program which began in 2017 and helps to find highly skilled individuals. Even though it is new, more than 40 000 people have migrated to Canada with this program. More than half of these foreign workers specialized in computer science, software engineering, and similar occupations. A positive LMIA is required for companies to hire foreign workers through this process.

International Mobility Program (IMB) – This program allows employers to hire foreign workers without a positive LMIA. This usually occurs when the employer would greatly benefit from a foreign worker filling the required position. Another reason would be that it provides a broader cultural or economic advantage to Canada.

Programs for Specific Skills

Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) – This is one of the methods that employers use to hire foreign workers for agricultural purposes. Companies can hire workers for 8 months at a time through this program. Employers must be able to provide transportation, housing, and adequate health and safety conditions for its workers. This program looks for individuals from specific countries. Countries that participate include Mexico, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. If you live in one of these countries, then keep this program in mind.

In-Home Caregivers – This is a very new pilot program introduced in 2019. It encompasses two different programs. The Home Child Care Program allows employers to find foreign workers with childcare experience. The Home Support Workers Program is for employers that need individuals with experience in caring for seniors, people with disabilities, or those who need constant medical treatment.

Foreign Academics – Universities will use this program to find foreign talent. This is important to them because it diversifies their research teams. It also helps these research teams to compete at an international level.

How Can I Get a Job Permit?

Finding a Canadian job offer requires a lot of effort on your part. It requires networking, research, and patience. Knowing English or French is crucial to finding a job in Canada as well. You can use the following link as a place to start looking for a job https://www.jobbankcanada.com. Once you find the right job, the employer must obtain an LMIA if necessary. Once this happens, you can apply for a work permit and even Permanent Residence if you qualify.

There are many benefits to working in Canada as a foreign worker. The most important of these is the advantage you get in immigration programs. Applying to Express Entry with a job offer will raise your CRS score. Additionally, there are many PNPs which are only accessible with a job offer. On top of the migratory advantages, working in Canada has many benefits of its own.

Find the Best Option for You

Even though a job offer might seem like an enticing way to migrate, it is not the best option for everyone. If you are unsure about the next steps you should take, you can come to us. At Gentium Immigration we can help you find the best migration plan available to you.  You can fill out this brief survey to book a free pre-consultation.  We hope to hear from you soon!

¡Hola!

Saludos!
