Family sponsorship is one of the fastest routes to Permanent Residence in Canada. Do you have a close family member established in Canada? Have you become a Permanent Resident and wish to bring your family as well? If your answer is yes to either of these questions, then sponsorship will likely work for you. Through this process, all your family members can become residents of Canada. Keep reading to find out how this program works and if you qualify.
The requirements to become a sponsor are not complicated. First, sponsors must be over 18 years old. Also, they must be a Permanent Resident or Citizen of Canada. Additionally, you can sponsor even if you live outside of Canada. Of course, you still need to be a Permanent Resident, and you must return to Canada by a certain date. As a side note, residents of Quebéc can sponsor too. The francophone province often has its own immigration programs, but it offers family sponsorship too.
An important part of sponsorship is finance. Sponsors must be able to support their sponsored relatives. This means that sponsors must prepare well to bring their family to Canada. Additionally, sponsors must comply with their sponsorship obligations. We will discuss these obligations later in the article. However, many of these obligations involve covering expenses for many years as well.
Who Can I Sponsor?
The sponsorship program allows you to bring most of your immediate family. The rules can change depending on the situation, but exceptions are not normal. With that said, your immediate family is obviously eligible. This means your spouse/partner and your children. Also, parents and grandparents can be sponsored as well. Lastly, you can sponsor an orphaned sibling, nephew/niece, or grandchild, but they must be under 18 years old and not in a common-law relationship.
There is a special benefit for bringing a spouse or partner. If your spouse applies under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada class, they can work in Canada while their applications are processed. However, this process is still a pilot program. This means that it is still new and has not been fully implemented yet. Yet, you can still participate.
Aside from this special work permit for your spouse/partner, other family members can apply for a normal work permit. This is a big help to sponsors because it eases the financial burden. Luckily, you do not need to pay for your young children’s education. Primary and secondary education in Canada is free! This makes sponsorship even more accessible.
Sponsors must sign a sponsorship agreement with their sponsored relative. This agreement state that the sponsor will be financially responsible if necessary. Further, it states that the sponsored relative will support themselves as well as they can. Additionally, more terms can be added depending on the relative being sponsored.
For example, there is an additional term when a spouse/partner is the sponsored family member. The sponsor must give financial support to their spouse/partner for three years after they become a Permanent Resident. Additionally, if children are sponsored, the sponsor must support them for 10 years or until they turn 25, whichever is first. Finally, parents and grandparents require the sponsor to support them for 20 years.
One last obligation and expense is federal reimbursement. Canada offers many benefits for its workers. Some of these benefits include financial contributions. However, if a spouse is working under the spousal open work permit, then the sponsor must reimburse these bonuses during the duration of the sponsorship agreement. The same goes for other family members.
